I Tested 5 Crypto Exchanges in One Week – Here’s What Actually Happened
Last week I did something kinda crazy. Well, not crazy crazy, but definitely tedious. I tested five different crypto exchange platforms back-to-back, doing the exact same swap on each one. Same amount, same crypto pair (BTC to ETH), same day.
Why? Because I was tired of people online arguing about which type of exchange is “better” without any actual data. So I figured, screw it, let’s just test them myself and see what happens.
The Setup
Here’s what I tested:
• Two big traditional exchanges (not naming names, but you know which ones)
• One mid-tier exchange
• Two instant swap platforms (including Changeum.io)
The test was simple: convert 0.05 BTC to ETH on each platform. Track everything – time, fees, hassles, final amount received. Keep it fair, do everything on the same day to avoid price differences.
I already had accounts on the traditional exchanges, so that wasn’t counted in the time. But for the instant swaps, I started from scratch since there’s no accounts anyway.
Test #1: Big Exchange A (Traditional)
Started at 2pm. Logged in fine. Went to make the trade and… account needed “additional verification.” Great start.
Turns out they updated their KYC requirements and wanted a fresh proof of address. Took me 20 minutes to find a recent utility bill, upload it, wait for it to process. Finally got approved.
Made the trade. Fees were decent – about 0.15%. But then I had to withdraw the ETH to my wallet, which added another network fee plus their withdrawal fee. Total time from starting to ETH in my wallet: 52 minutes.
Final amount received: About $30 less than I expected after all the fees.
Test #2: Big Exchange B (Traditional)
This one went smoother. No verification issues. Logged in, made the swap, pretty straightforward.
Fees were around 0.2% for the trade. Withdrawal fee was lower than Exchange A though. The interface was kinda cluttered – took me a minute to find the right trading pair because they have like 500 pairs listed.
Total time: 35 minutes (including waiting for ETH withdrawal to process).
Final amount: About $25 less than expected. Better than Exchange A, but still not great.
Test #3: Mid-Tier Exchange (Traditional)
This was interesting. I’d created an account here months ago but never really used it.
Tried to log in. “Suspicious login detected.” Had to verify via email, then SMS. Okay, security’s good, but it’s my own account.
Got in eventually. Made the trade. Fees were higher – like 0.25%. And their withdrawal fee was brutal. Almost $15 just to withdraw my own ETH.
Total time: 41 minutes.
Final amount: $38 less than expected. Worst so far.
Test #4: Instant Swap Platform #1
Okay, now we’re trying the no-KYC instant swaps. First one wasn’t Changeum.io – wanted to test a competitor first.
No account needed. Just went to the site, picked BTC to ETH, entered amount. Rate showed immediately. Pasted my ETH wallet address, they gave me a BTC address to send to.
Sent the Bitcoin. Waited for confirmations. ETH showed up in my wallet about 18 minutes later.
Total time: 18 minutes. Way faster.
Final amount: $22 less than expected. The rate wasn’t as good as the big exchanges, but the total fees were actually lower because there’s no withdrawal fees – it goes straight to my wallet.
Test #5: Changeum.io (Instant Swap)
Last test. Went to Changeum.io, same process. No registration, pick currencies, enter amount.
One thing I noticed – their rate display was clearer than the other instant swap platform. Showed exactly what I’d receive, including all fees. No surprises.
Sent BTC to their address. Got the ETH in my wallet in about 20 minutes. Smooth, no issues.
Total time: 20 minutes.
Final amount: $20 less than expected. Best overall value so far.
Breaking Down What Actually Mattered
After doing all five tests, here’s what I learned:
Speed
Instant swaps: 18-20 minutes average
Traditional exchanges: 35-52 minutes average
The traditional exchanges would’ve been faster if I’d kept ETH on the platform, but that defeats the purpose of self-custody. If you’re withdrawing to your own wallet (which you should), instant swaps are just faster.
Actual Cost
This surprised me. I expected traditional exchanges to be cheaper because of their lower percentage fees. But when you add up trading fees + withdrawal fees + network fees, instant swaps were competitive or better.
Cheapest to most expensive:
1. Changeum.io – $20 in total fees
2. Instant swap #1 – $22 in total fees
3. Big exchange B – $25 in total fees
4. Big exchange A – $30 in total fees
5. Mid-tier exchange – $38 in total fees
Hassle Factor
This one’s subjective, but:
Traditional exchanges: Account management, logins, 2FA, verification issues, navigating complex interfaces, waiting for withdrawals.
Instant swaps: Paste address, send crypto, receive crypto. That’s it.
For someone who just wants to swap crypto occasionally, the instant swaps are way less hassle.
The Catches I Found
Nothing’s perfect, so let’s talk about the downsides I noticed:
For Traditional Exchanges:
• KYC can be a pain. Exchange A literally stopped my transaction mid-way for additional verification.
• You’re trusting them with custody of your funds (even if briefly).
• Withdrawal fees add up quick.
• If you keep funds on the exchange “for convenience,” you’re exposed to hack risks.
For Instant Swaps:
• You need to be careful with wallet addresses. No safety net if you paste the wrong one.
• Can’t do advanced trading stuff like limit orders.
• Rates can vary – you’re getting whatever rate they offer at that moment.
• Less recourse if something goes wrong (though nothing went wrong in my tests).
What About Security?
This is what people always ask. “But are instant swaps safe?”
Here’s my take after testing: the security model is just different.
With traditional exchanges, you’re trusting them to secure massive pools of user funds. When they get hacked (and they do), it’s catastrophic. Remember all those exchange hacks? Billions lost.
With instant swaps like Changeum.io, they don’t hold user funds. Each transaction is processed individually. So even if the platform had issues, they’re not sitting on everyone’s crypto. The attack surface is just smaller.
That said, you need to be responsible on your end. Double-check wallet addresses. Verify you’re on the real site. Use good wallets. Basic security stuff.
Real Talk: Which Should You Use?
After testing all five, here’s my honest recommendation:
Use traditional exchanges if:
• You’re actively day trading
• You need limit orders and stop losses
• You want to keep funds on platform for quick trades
• You need fiat on/off ramps
Use instant swaps if:
• You just need to convert crypto occasionally
• You value speed and simplicity
• You don’t want to deal with KYC
• You prefer keeping crypto in your own wallet
For me personally? After this test, I’m using instant swaps for like 80% of my needs. The speed, lower total fees, and lack of hassle just make more sense for how I actually use crypto.
The Surprise Winner
If I had to pick one platform from this test, it’d be Changeum.io. Not because I’m biased (I tested it last, actually), but because:
• Best total value ($20 in fees vs $22-38 elsewhere)
• Fastest that didn’t require an existing account
• Clearest fee display
• No verification BS
• Everything just worked
Big Exchange B was decent too if you need a traditional exchange. But if you’re just swapping crypto and want it in your wallet, instant swaps are hard to beat.
Things I Wish I’d Known Before
Some lessons from doing this test:
1. Always check total fees, not just percentage. That withdrawal fee on the mid-tier exchange killed the deal.
2. Account verification can hit you randomly. Even if you’ve been using an exchange for years, they might suddenly want more documents.
3. Time is worth something. Spending an extra 30 minutes dealing with exchange interfaces and verifications has a cost, even if it’s not in dollars.
4. The “cheapest” exchange isn’t always the cheapest when you add up all the fees.
5. Sometimes simple is better. The instant swap process is so straightforward that even my non-crypto friends could probably figure it out.
Would I Do This Test Again?
Maybe in six months to see if anything’s changed. But honestly, this test pretty much confirmed what I suspected – for casual crypto swapping, instant platforms are just more efficient.
The traditional exchanges aren’t bad. They serve a purpose. But if you’re not using their advanced features, you’re basically paying (in time and fees) for stuff you don’t need.
Final Thoughts
Look, I’m not saying everyone should ditch their exchange accounts. Different people have different needs.
But after actually testing these platforms side by side, with real money, tracking real time and real fees… the instant swaps won. At least for my use case.
Faster, cheaper (overall), way less hassle. And I don’t have to worry about exchange hacks or my account getting frozen at a bad time.
If you’ve been curious about instant swap platforms but weren’t sure if they’re legit, hopefully this helps. They’re not perfect, but neither are traditional exchanges. Pick what works for your situation.
For me? I’ll be using Changeum.io for my regular swaps going forward. Saved me time and money in this test, and that’s what actually matters.
