Llanelli Guide Dog Takes To The Stage

Llanelli guide dog Crompton could be in line for a canine Oscar following his recent performances in the musical Annie at the town’s Ffwrnes Theatre.

Crompton, a six-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, joined the young members of the Linzi Richards Dance Company to play the role of stray dog Sandy at a dress rehearsal and two performances.

His proud owner, Stephen Ricketts, said: “He had to sit down and lie down on stage, and listen to commands from the two girls playing Annie. He nailed it in two weeks! We used gravy bones as special treats so that he started to relate to the actresses as friends.

“The final show was amazing. Annie must still have had a treat in her hand because when she waved at someone in the audience, Crompton jumped up and put two paws on her arm. The audience thought it was part of the show!

“He did run off stage a couple of times and have a sniff around, and he also jumped on the bed in one scene at the children’s home. The rest of the time he was lying beside me watching the show.”

To thank Crompton, Guide Dogs fundraisers were invited to hold a bucket collection, raising £185.33 in two days.
