MVG not as good as he used to be
When asked what he thought about the outcome of the Premier League Darts finals, Rob Cross said;
“I would’ve probably liked to see Gezzy [Gerwyn Price] win it. How good was he in his semi-final? But the thing is, with Michael [van Gerwen], you can just never write him off. When I first came on the scene and used to play him in 2017, he was a different animal then. The 170s, when he needed something, he hit it. It’s all about putting the pressure on and taking what you can. He [MVG] used to do it more than any other player I’ve seen. Look, he’s still winning tournaments but is he as good as what he used to be? No, probably not. But the standard has gone up also. I used to remember Michael used to buzz for big averages, whereas now he’s all about the wins.”
Phil Taylor was a level above MVG
Cross was quizzed on who he thinks has the better reputation within darts, Phil Taylor or MVG;
“Phil won so much, didn’t he? He was dominant. We aren’t just talking about dominance for ten years or whatever, it was probably 20. I don’t think Phil will ever get topped. Michael won a European Championship with a tournament average of 112. Most people just want to hit that in one game, let alone through five or six games or whatever. I don’t think that will ever get beaten, but if it does I hope it’s me that beats it! At the same time I don’t think it will ever get beat, it’s amazing. He was a level above Phil. But Michael and Phil are two different eras. Michael had wins over Phil later on when Phil was getting to the end. That’s life. You have an old great like Taylor, and it was Michael to fill his boots. Michael has taken over and taken the flame on that.”
MVG & I have cleared the air
Reacting to MVG’s comments that Cross isn’t suited for the Premier League, Rob replied;
“It’s just interviews, isn’t it. Me and Mike had a chat about it. He’s good like that, you know? If he’s got something to say, he’ll say it, and so will I. We’ve cleared the air, it’s all good fun. That’s what I respect about Michael. If he’s got a problem, he’ll tell you. Maybe both of us were in the wrong the way we went about it, but it’s all sorted now. It’s water under the bridge. You have to spend a lot of time with these boys so if you can get along, it’s a lot easier than blanking each other and feeling a little bit awkward in the practice room.”
No one will win the World Championship’s on their first attempt like I did
When asked if anyone will come through and win the World Championships on their first attempt like him, Cross said;
“If anyone came in and did that, especially with the standard now. Lets not forget, alright, I did what I did, nobody has really ever seen it, but do I think it’s going to be done again? No. I think it’d be very hard now. If we look at the rules now, I sort of couldn’t have even got my Tour card on the Challenge Tour because I never went to Q-school. I paid my money late to go and play the Challenge Tour. Now the rule is that if you don’t play Q-school, you can’t play Challenge Tour. So you have no right to even get a card now so I was lucky at the time. I was a bit fortunate in that way with the rules and regulations. But can I see anyone emulating it? No. It’s different now.”
