TSSA Leader Manuel Cortes today (Friday) wrote to Lee Waters, MS the Deputy Minister responsible for Transport for Wales (TfW) demanding an urgent meeting after TfW indicated it was considering big changes to Welsh Railway Policing.
Cortes also demanded a meeting with James Price, CEO of TfW, after the transport body revealed they are considering replacing British Transport Police with local police forces.
TSSA represents Police Community Support Officers, as well as specialist civilian roles, such as forensics, and admin workers in British Transport Police.
Cortes said, “This suggestion is unwise, unnecessary and unworkable.
“British Transport Police (BTP) are a highly regarded, efficient and well-embedded cross-border service, with expertise in railway policing, which needs needs absolutely no fixing.
“The fact is criminals pay no attention to the border between Wales and England. Replacing BTP with officers from four different Welsh police forces will cause unnecessary complications coordinating between the forces – and the only people that’s going to help are the criminals
